UK Domestic Air Conditioning: A study of occupant use and energy efficiency
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper presents the results of a study of air-conditioning usage in homes in the southeast of England. First part of the study consisted surveying 13 dwellings with air-conditioning for a series of 4 week periods during the summer of 2004. The second part involved testing energy efficiency of “single-split” and “portable” air-conditioning units under “in-use” conditions. Data on usage patterns and typical temperature profiles during operation was collected and is presented here. Temperatures at which users switched their units on were, on average, 24-25C, while typical running times for a single operation were found to be around 5 hours during daytime and 7 hours at night in bedrooms. The study also indicated high occupant satisfaction rates with split-units. An unexpectedly high overall energy efficiency ratio (EER), of 5-10, was found for the single-split unit tested during the relatively mild autumn weather. However, a very poor EER, of less than 1, was found for the portable unit tested. Further work is needed to increase the reliability and statistical significance of the results.

Potentials of Vernacular Climatic Solutions (VCS) in Energy Efficiency of Domestic Buildings in Hot and Humid Climate: The Case Study of Bushehr, Iran
This study aims to use vernacular climatic solutions (VCS) of traditional dwellings of Bushehr in common residential buildings of this city in southern Iran and answer to the question that “What is the effect of VCS in terms of energy consumption in these buildings?”. This research was conducted on two levels. At the first level, after selecting an existing model of common residential buildings...
متن کاملNetwork of Sensor and Actuator Agents for Building Automation Systems
Due to at least two reasons, energy consumption for heating, ventilation, air conditioning (HVAC) and domestic hot water (DHW) systems should be reduced. First, the total energy consumption is high since nearly 20% of total energy in USA is accounted for HVAC systems. Sencond reason is exploitation of renevable energy sources, which depend on current time and weather situation. Thus, the energy...

Plug load and Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems are the two largest energy consumers in commercial buildings. The use of the 2 systems is closely related to occupant behavior and schedule. It is significant to learn the occupant behavior pattern and predict occupancy schedule for controlling the systems to save energy. A data mining study is performed on the office applian...

This paper presents an investigation of how Model Predictive Control (MPC) and weather predictions can increase the energy efficiency in Integrated Room Automation (IRA) while respecting occupant comfort. IRA deals with the simultaneous control of heating, ventilation and air conditioning as well as blind positioning and electric lighting such that the room temperature as well as CO2 and lumina...
متن کاملDesigning Fuzzy Controller for Air Conditioning Systems in order to Save Energy Consumption and Provide Optimal Conditions in Closed Environments (Indoors)
Today air conditioning systems have been considered by all people as one of welfarerequirements in buildings and closed environments. Since a considerable part of energy lossoccurs in ordinary modern systems, new strategies and solutions are developed in the field inorder to save amount of energy consumption and observe environmental considerations. Fuzzycontrol is one of these methods which pr...
